The pluricentenial tradition of Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra plants its roots both in the historical and social fabric of volterran society.
In fact, from the original Monte Pio, one of the oldest institutions of Europe, founded in 1494 to fight usury and facilitating requests for credit, the Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra was established in 1893 "in order that the city would have its own credit institution to collect the savings which its alabaster industry (crafted from etruscan and roman times) and agricultural sector were accumulating in the area."
Many local studios, which from one generation to the next continue to produce artifacts of incredible beauty, were established and continue to develope thanks also to the continuous support given by the Bank to the artisan entrepreneurialship. New forms of artistic crafts complement the traditional alabaster craftsmanship, proofing the city has been recuperating in the last few years that typically tuscan tradition of unicity and quality products introduced into high-end markets.
Many young people in the last few years have taken up again the tradtional crafts that used to be of their great-grandfathers, grandfathers and fathers.
In the last few years the Bank promoted many projects joining tradtition and innovation, with the purpose of offering leading-edge products and services through a dedicated office for special credit services and a network of branches in seven provinces throughout Tuscany, as well as valueing the culture tied to artisan entrepreneurialship, not to mention the numerous artistic and advertising projects presently going on.
The Bank sponsors on a regular basis conventions, seminars and workshops with experts and high-standing institutions in which themes of vast interest for the commercial and educational development of the local economy are focused and discussed with local businesspeople.
The recent advertisement campaign to promote alabaster, started motu proprio by the Bank and still going on, is particularly relevant; billboards along main road arteries that lead to Volterra and at the Pisa Airport GALILEO GALILEI are used to invite tourists to fully discover the local art treasures production.
Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra hosts some precious alabaster artwork(some examples are in the photo on the side, part of its private collection) in dedicated areas of its headquarters in Piazza dei Priori as well as in selected branches, while at the renovated Centro Studi Santa Maria Maddelena are hosted in showcases artifacts of volterran craftsmen members of the Arteinbottega Association, which daily work in promoting local businesses must be fully appreciated, as demonstrated in this brochure, which second edition our institution gladly sponsored. All the above with the certainty that only uniting efforts and working together as a system we can obtain satisfaction and prosperity.
